Assignment for Friday, November 22, 2019

Ok, get to the end of Chapter 18.  (Again, not many chapters, but many "philosophy" moments.)

Listen...I feel a little sheepish about our conversation today.  I feel like I was kind of harsh about pizza.  It led to a lot of reflection, after class.  I replayed our exchanges over and over in my head, and I find that I did not act well.  I wish that I could do it all over again.  

I should have been much much harsher.

Don't get me wrong--you can make anything you want to make out of a pizza.

Just don't call it pizza.

I have realized that a wrap is, properly speaking, is a genus of the species "sandwich."  Sort of like a hammock is a kind of bed...  Anyway, I never mind admitting when I'm wrong, as I think I have shown at least once per class meeting.

Also, I know that we did lean heavily on our reading in today's discussion, but the part about how we're always announcing things about who we are, on all channels, is really important.  We like to think that we are always in control of our own identity, but a lot of it has to do who other people take us to be.  (Hayley Mills, from the 1961 Parent Trap:  HERE .  You should really watch it.  It is not at all sentimental or soppy, like the (several) remakes. Assignment for Friday, August 30

1)  Read and take careful notes on Twain's "On the Decay of the Art of Lying."  It's not that long. You can find it online HERE . 2)  Type up and bring to class a short answer to this question:  Is Twain right about lying, and what makes you think so?  (Single spaced, less than a full page.) 3)  Plan for printer failure.   Get it done and finished early.  As you know from the syllabus, I won't accept late assignments .  And they are worth points on your final grade. 4)  Also, make a careful note of the address of this blog.  I will post information and announcements here, and we'll use it to comment and share thoughts.
